While the problem of predators sexually abusing children has always existed, the advent of the internet has expanded their range exponentially. Before, a pedophile's hunting ground was limited to the children he had access to. Now, a pedophile can creep into a child's room or cross international borders via the computer network. Unlike wolves and mountain lions which are dying out due to habitat loss, pedophiles seem to be multiplying, either in number or in number of victims.

The internet is a common tool for pedophiles, as seen recently on the Dateline NBC series "To Catch a Predator." Luring children is easy over the computer. Twenty percent of kids who go to meet someone whom they met online chatted with that person less than two hours. You may think that your kids are savvy and sophisticated, and they might think so, too, but they're not.

The vast majority of children who are abused, however, know their abuser and did not meet them on the computer. 12% knew their abuser or abductor casually, like someone who worked on their house a few times, like in the Elizabeth Smart case. Most kids who are abused, 85% knew their abuser well, as the abuser was a relative, a minister or priest, a coach, a teacher, etc. Only 3% of children are abused by strangers, i.e., "stranger danger." Your child is most likely to be abused by someone they and you know quite well.

The average person knows about 250 people pretty well. That's the average number of guests at a wedding, these days. Since 1- 2% of the population are pedophiles, that means that at least two but up to five of the people you know are pedophiles and have considered how to rape your child.

The average pedophile sexually abuses 117 victims before he is stopped.

At least 95% of pedophiles are male. Though sexual abuse by women is even more underreported than that by men, female pedophiles usually have far fewer victims and prefer teens to young children.

There are two classes of pedophiles: primary pedophiles and secondary pedophiles.

Secondary pedophiles have sexual relationships with adults. In times of stress and in the presence of alcohol or other drugs, if the opportunity for the sexual abuse of a minor, usually a teen, arises, a secondary pedophile may abuse. Secondary pedophiles prefer sex with a minor of the gender that they prefer in adults,  i.e, they are "gay" or "straight."

A primary pedophile, however, cannot be considered gay or straight. The youth of the child is more important than the child's gender. Primary pedophiles often abuse both boys and girls, though they may develop preferences or grooming techniques that work better on one gender than the other, or they may have access to one gender of children more than the other. Primary pedophiles prefer younger children, usually fifteen and younger, and some sexually abuse infants.

There are twelve traits common to pedophiles. My seminar details these twelve traits so you have a better chance of spotting the pedophiles that you know before they have a chance to rape your child.

TK Kenyon performs this seminar free of charge to parent groups at schools, libraries, or other venues for adults whenever and wherever she is available. During the nationwide RABID book tour in April and May, she will reserve several dates in each city for this workshop.
